Kazakhstan 50-TENGE (KM256) Northern Hawk-Owl
The Northern Hawk-Owl (Surnia ulula) is the only living species in the genus Surnia. (Most of the other owls are in the genus Tyto.) They live right across the globe in the north (surprise) and prefer coniferous forests, or coniferous with some deciduous mixed in. They are one of the few owls that carries on its business during the day.
The denomination "tenge" means "scale" in Kazakh. While the wildlife series is predominantly a collectors' issue, the copper-nickel coins like this one have been known to make it out into circulation.
