Japan 500-YEN (Y189)

Cat + Birds

In 2008, Japan started the "47 Prefectures" coin program, which was completed in 2016. The program includes silver collector coins, plus circulating bi-metallic coins.

The 2012 Tochigi Prefecture coin features a sleeping cat with flying birds. This is a wooden sculpture found at the entrance of the Nikkō Tōshō-gū shrine.

The sleeping cat symbolizes peace.
