Indonesia 1-RUPIAH (KM20) Fantail

This bird is identified as a 'Fantail flycatcher' by the Krause catalogue. There are about 1,500 bird species in Indonesia, and just over 500 of those are endemic. The endemic list does not include a Fantail flycatcher of any type, and no such bird seems to exist.

However, there are 48 known species of Fantail (genus Rhipidura) at least 22 of which are found in Indonesia with eight of those being endemic: Cinnamon-tailed fantail (Banda Islands), Brown-capped fantail, White-bellied fantail, Rufous-tailed fantail (Java), Long-tailed fantail (Lesser Sundra Islands), Streak-breasted fantail and Tawny-backed fantail (Southern Maluka Islands), and Rusty-bellied Fantail (Sulawesi).

Fantails are specialist aerial feeders, eating insects while in flight. The posture on the coin is typical of Fantails, with a hunched stance, erect tail, and drooping wings.
