Guernsey 1-PENNY (KM27) Northern Gannet

The Northern Gannet is the largest seabird in the North Atlantic. They like to live on steep cliffs and off-shore islands. Two-thirds of the world's population lives in the United Kingdom, with the rest living in Canada, Ireland, and Norway. A small population lives in Northern France, and presumably on the island of Guernsey, since they appear on the coins.

Starting in 1977, Guernsey dropped 'New' from the decimal coin denominations. This penny was issued for circulation in 1977 and 1979. A collectors' version was minted in 1981.
