The Himalayan monal is the national bird of Nepal where it is known as Danphe. A largish member of the pheasant family, the males are brightly coloured with iridescent feathers and the females are dull brown. (Birds are like that.)
This coin was issued from 1966 to 1971 under the Nepalese ruler Mahendra Bir Bikram. I am calling this coin as KM753, even though the date seems to be 2030 (aka 1973), which would make it KM801. However, #801 is listed as 20 mm in size, and #753 is listed as 18.6 mm (the size of this coin). Also, the outer tines of the trident curve outward on this coin, which is how #753 is pictured in catalogues. On #801, then tines clearly curve inward. I suspect there is an error in the catalogues (Krause & Numista).
Note: Since adding this coin, I have acquired an example of KM801 and determined that the Krause catalogue is wrong about its size. Now I suspect that the images are also wrong, and this coin may in fact be KM801.
All coin images in Daniel's Coin Zoo are from my personal collection. I collect, research, and personally photograph every coin displayed on this site. PLEASE do not take my images without permission. If you would like to use any coin image you see, just ask me. Thank you.
