Giant Triton

Charonia tritonis aka Triton's Trumpet or Giant Triton is a very large sea snail -- up to 60 cm long -- found throughout the Indo-Pacific oceans. The shell is prized as a decorative item and can be used as a trumpet.

This very thick (3.1 mm) coin was originally minted in 1995 and again in 2007 in nickel-brass, which is non-magnetic (KM88). Some coins dated 2007 -- including this example -- are magnetic because they are plated steel. Therefore, the correct Krause catalogue number is 88a, with the "a" added to denote the same coin minted in a different metal. (As of the 2014 edition of the 2001-date coin catalogue, this coin is not properly listed.)
