The Kyrgyz Republic (formerly known as Kirghizia) is a land-locked mountainous country in Central Asia that achieved independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
It is believed that "Kyrgyz" comes from the Turkic word for "forty", and literally translates as "we are forty." This refers to the forty clans united by the legendary hero Manas in the early 9th century CE. The 40 clans are also represented in the 40 rays of the sun on the Kyrgyz flag.
