Civilization in India can be traced back 9,000 years to the first permanent settlements that would develop into the sophisticated and technologically advanced Indus Valley Civilization (3300 to 1500 BCE).
The European invasion started in 1498, and the end of foreign domination began in 1918 when Mahatma Gandhi led a non-violent independence movement involving 50 million people and lasting nearly three decades. India achieved independence in 1947, and the Republic of India was formed in 1950.
Through thousands of years, India has developed and preserved an extremely rich and unique cultural heritage.
